What does website maintenance actually include?

A website isn't a one-off purchase. It needs hosting, security patches, and someone watching that it's still up. That's what a maintenance plan covers, and it's worth knowing what's in each tier rather than picking on price alone.

What every plan covers

  • Hosting, security, and backups.
  • Software updates, so the site doesn't quietly fall behind and become a security risk.
  • Uptime monitoring, so a problem gets caught before a customer finds it for you.

The three tiers

Essential, from £75 a month, covers the basics above with a three-business-day support response.

Standard, from £150 a month, adds 2 hours of content updates a month, a monthly analytics report, and a two-business-day response time.

Pro, from £275 a month, adds 4 hours of content updates, priority support with a one-business-day response, and a quarterly strategy call.

Why some sites can't start on the cheapest plan

A few features carry their own minimum: booking, payments, Shopify, live chat, the AI chatbot, e-signatures, and CRM integration all need at least Standard, since they're live integrations that can break and need someone keeping an eye on them. A client portal needs Pro, since it's holding logins and private data. If your build includes one of these, your plan starts there rather than at Essential, whatever package you choose.

Paying annually

Every plan can be paid annually for ten months' price instead of twelve, effectively two months free. It's the same plan either way, just a different billing rhythm.

The bit that catches people out

A maintenance plan isn't an optional extra, it's required from launch on every site I build, the same way you wouldn't drive a car with no insurance. Budget for it as part of the real cost of the site, not as something to decide about later.
